It is an exploration of the slippages and incongruencies between the word written and spoken, and between signifiers as meaning-bearing entities and as pure phenomena. In the climax of the Miller&#8217;s Tale, a man extends his ass through a window, expecting it to be kissed, but rather he is branded with a hot iron, &#8220;And for the smert he wende for to dye&#8221;.
